HONDURAS

Way back when, during our two-year slow travel trip through Latin America, we actually skipped Honduras.

Fear definitely played a role, but it was also because we had neither the budget* nor inclination to learn how to dive, and crossing the border for another Mayan ruin wasn’t a priority.

Unfortunately, those are still the main two reasons most travellers even go there.

Skip forward to another of our backpacking trips in Central America though, and we decided that a couple of weeks on a Honduran island getting our diving qualifications really did seem like a good way to spend our time, as well as our money.

That turned out to be the best choice ever, as the little island of Utila far exceeded our expectations and gave us rock-solid foundations for blowing bubbles all over the world.

So, we may not have visited much of Honduras - and the Unesco World Heritage site of Copan eluded us yet again - but you will find almost everything you need for a fantastic experience of Utila.

*it remains the most affordable place in the world to get your PADI though!
