NICARAGUA
The Nicaraguan secret is out.
Waves and beaches to die for, thriving adventure tourism, colourful sun-drenched colonial cities and an island which is home to not one, but two volcanoes.
After several decades of civil war, political strife and disastrous American interventions, this country was slowly repairing itself and rewriting the story - but in recent years seems to be slipping back into an autocracy. On our most recent visit, it was clear how much that had negatively affected tourism numbers and destinations, as well as parts of wider society.
Yet, it remains a much-loved favourite of backpackers and those looking for a more affordable and off-the-beaten-track standalone alternative to neighbouring Costa Rica.
If you’re looking for a quintessentially Central American experience, you’ll find it in Nicaragua.
